What is Positive Behaviour Support
Positive Behaviour Support (PBS) is a process of working with a person and their support network to meet the needs of the person and improve quality of life.
Positive Behaviour Support focuses on understanding the form and function of problematic behaviours (what is it and why). It allows us to understand the unmet needs being communicated to facilitate agency, empowerment, choice and control. Individualised plans are developed to meet those needs through collaborative approaches including environmental changes, skill development and coping strategies to build resilience.
Dignity, Respect, and Empowerment
Positive Behaviour Support strategies are based on choice, control, rights, and empowerment. PBS teaches new skills and creates supportive environments where people’s needs are met, so that they feel safe, supported, respected and have a positive self-identity.
Positive Behaviour Supports
Bruce Psychology offer Positive Behaviour Support (PBS) services in Mandurah and the Peel Region
Positive Behaviour Support is a holistic approach to improving quality of life for people with disabilities, reducing risk of harm and unnecessary restrictive practices through understanding behaviour. Behaviours are a form of communication used by everyone, particularly for those living with disabilities who are unable to access more sophisticated language to speak up about their needs. If we have a better understanding of what is driving problematic behaviour we are able to meet needs in alternative ways in order to achieve resolution.

Positive Behaviour Support and the NDIS
If you receive NDIS funding, Positive Behaviour Support may be an eligible support service. Behavioural issues often develop due to an unmet need being expressed in ways that can cause harm to the person, their support network or their ability to live a fulfilling life.
PBS helps address this by learning to recognise early signs of distress and developing strategies customised to individual strengths, preferences and needs.
NDIS Positive Behaviour Support Plans
An NDIS Positive Behaviour Support Plan frequently includes assessment and intervention services. As an NDIS registered provider, we can work with you to understand your goals and tailor an individualised PBS plan focused on building skills to support behavioural change and improve quality of life.
In addition, a Positive Behaviour Support assessment aims to strengthen the safeguards for people receiving behaviour support, and to demonstrate a commitment to the reduction and elimination of restrictive practices if they are currently used or may be required. This is about balancing human rights and happiness for those living with disabilities and also respecting the safety and rights of families and support teams.
Regular check-ins allow us to monitor your progress over time as we respect and understand that this can be a complex process.

We provide an individualised plan through a positive behaviour support framework to balance the health, safety and wellbeing of the participant and their network.
NDIS participants are welcome to contact us to discuss the service options covered by their NDIS plan. We are fully registered and have experience navigating NDIS behaviour support. We also offer Therapy Supports (Psychology).
