What are common challenges of having both ASD and ADHD?
Put simply, it is the seeking of stimulation and of being easily overwhelmed. Each person’s experiences are unique. Collaborating with a professional through one-on-one support will help to develop a toolkit of strategies for coping with daily experiences.
Which non-medication supports help?
Working with a psychologist is one as they do not prescribe medications. A psychologist will assist you in forming the best strategies to help you with your unique experiences. Some strategies they may suggest include coaching to help organise your routine, sleep hygiene, neurodiversity-adapted CBT, ACT or DBT (see Techniques page for more information on these) and suggest additions to your routine such as exercise or social activities.
Does masking ASD or ADHD traits affect management?
Yes, masking (or hiding traits) has a negative effect as it increases stress levels, it can lead to burn out and it hides traits that need support.
