What are chronic health issues?
Chronic health issues can be a range of conditions that last for 3 months or longer, they may get worse over time and impact significantly on quality of life. It is largely agreed that chronic health issues cannot be cured. As psychologists, we provide support for the mental and emotional effects that can result from a diagnosis or continued difficulties of living with the chronic condition. We work in complement with medical interventions to assist you to live well whilst healing.
Can chronic health issues be prevented?
Living a healthy lifestyle is key to continued good health. If you are concerned about being diagnosed with a health issue from lifestyle choices and struggle to give them up, sessions with a psychologist can help in uncovering causes of the patterns of behaviour or underlying emotion disruptions that lead to an unhealthy habit to be formed.
How do chronic health issues affect mental health?
A diagnosis can lead to some people to feel anxious about the future, grieving the loss of a lifestyle they can no longer live or feeling isolated if they are no longer able to participate in once loved activities. The on-going living with a chronic health issue can lead to feelings of frustration and helplessness. These continued emotional states may then lead to deeper issues such as depression and social, generalised or other types of anxiety. All of which can be helped to overcome by getting psychological support from a professional.
