What are common symptoms of anxiety?
Feeling a sense of danger, old hands and/or feet, increased heart rate, dry mouth, shortness of breath, sweating (eg. palms, underarms), trembling or feeling weak are common symptoms of anxiety.
This is due to the body being in a state of fear, which activates the sympathetic nervous system and triggers a response most commonly known as “fight or flight”.
You don’t have to suffer in silence. Seeing a professional for psychotherapy to talk about your condition can go a long way to alleviating these issues for good. In the meantime, you can try the techniques mentioned in the following question to manage your symptoms.
How do I calm anxiety fast?
Deep breathing techniques (such as Box Breathing. A Box Breathing video can be found on our Wellness page).
You can also try the 333 technique: when you feel anxious, take a moment to look around yourself and, in your mind, identify 3 objects, 3 sounds, and 3 moving body parts. This helps interrupt the train of thought that is likely causing the fight-or-flight response.
Can anxiety cause chest pain?
Yes, this is called a psychosomatic symptom where your mind causes a physical sensation in your body, most commonly it is chest pain.
What’s the difference between anxiety and panic attacks?
Anxiety is usually associated with worries or worrying, whereas a panic attack is much more intense and can last 5 to 20 minutes, and is usually triggered by an event or a situation.
Why do I feel anxious for no reason?
Anxiety can be caused by subconscious thoughts/memories, past experiences, or psychological factors such as diet or sleep deprivation. Due to this, the worries aren’t at the forefront of the mind, so it feels like there is no cause for the feelings associated.
